Sprint Finally Getting Another Windows Phone Handset?

We just took a peek at some unreleased Windows Phone hardware from LG, which looks like it will be bringing model E740H to Telus in Canada. This isn't the first new LG Windows Phone model we've had the chance to look at lately, and it turns out it's far from being the last; yet another LG model has recently come to our attention, with model LS831 showing-up with some new paperwork at the FCC.

This is the second time we've looked at this phone, which first hit the FCC in the fall. Now we get access to new documents not originally available, including pictures and even a manual. We don't get a ton of insight into the hardware, but as this is Windows Phone we're talking about, you can guess what to generally expect. We can see a five-megapixel main camera on its rear, which matches the placement used with the E740H.

If the presence of Sprint bands and an EV-DO radio don't make it clear enough where this LG handset is headed, the phone's paperwork includes a letter from Sprint. It looks like this won't be one of the new models to operate on Sprint's upcoming LTE network, with no sign of 4G connectivity. Considering the carrier's distaste for current-gen Windows Phone hardware and software, we're wondering just what Sprint's up to here.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Launch Rumors Look To New, Later Date

It's no secret that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, after making its international and Verizon LTE debuts, will be coming to Sprint and its new LTE network. Just when that's going to be, however, is one detail Sprint's been keeping from us all. All the latest rumors seem to be looking to a mid-April launch, with both the Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper, the other LTE model to kick-off Sprint's network, tipped for April 15. At least, that's what we had been hearing, but over the weekend a new leak arrived, suggesting that the Sprint Galaxy Nexus might have a slightly longer wait before it launches.

As far as visually convincing leaks go, this find leaves a lot to be desired. Just a basic word processor document, it does little to try and convince us it's an official internal publication. That said, if we're to have a little faith here, the leak suggests that the LG Viper will, in fact, launch on April 15 as we'd heard, but the Galaxy Nexus won't hit stores for another week after at, finally landing on April 22.

Sprint and HTC have an event planned for Wednesday, and while we don't expect to hear anything about the Nexus directly, Sprint may offer a little insight while discussing its general LTE launch plans.

Android 4.0.4 ICS Update Leaked for Sprint Google Nexus S 4G

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to hit Samsung-made Google Nexus S 4G devices on Sprint soon but if you just can't wait until that OTA update notification hits your phone, you might just be lucky!

The folks over at BriefMobile have managed to grab what appears to be (claimed) the official Ice Cream Sandwich update which will be hitting devices soon over-the-air. The ROM contains Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and the source link below has everything you need to get started (if you can't wait for the official update or if you don't already run some sort of ICS custom ROM).

EVO 4G's Android 2.2 update starts trickling out tomorrow, loads of new features and fixes in store?

We're not certain that this date is going to hold -- things like this have an uncanny tendency to slip at the last possible moment -- but we're at least hopeful to see some internal Sprint communication that they're trying to get the EVO 4G updated to Froyo as soon as tomorrow, July 30. It'd be the perfect way to kick off the weekend, wouldn't it? Turns out this is no mere 2.2 upgrade, though -- they're making a bunch of changes, too, including a host of new preloaded widgets, a flashlight mode for the camera's LED flash, light-assisted 720p video, and "improvement" to the quality of said video capture (something we specifically complained about in our review). Unfortunately, it looks like the hotspot hack might be sealed off with this update, but that really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. As we said, we're hopefully the date sticks, because Sprint has identified it as a "high priority for competitive reasons" -- in other words, these guys must be feeling the Droid heat -- but the PR is apparently going to identify the week of August 1 as the first push, so the devices getting the OTA tomorrow might just be a very small, select group to ensure that nothing spectacularly bad happens. We're pulling for you, EVO owners.

Blackberry 6 OS Caught Running on Verizon Bold 9650

Some early screenshots have emerged of RIM's next-generation BlackBerry 6 operating system on the non-touchscreen Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Bold 9650.



Though neither the carrier nor Research in Motion have announced whether the 9650 will receive an upgrade to version 6, it has been speculated that current devices that were released recently may get the makeover in time.

The iPhone Comes to Sprint. Well, Not Quite...

With rumors swirling that the iPhone may soon make its way to rivals T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless from AT&T in the USA, Sprint also wants in on the iOS action and America's third largest carrier isn't shy. To that end, the carrier has seemingly teamed up with equipment maker ZTE to bring a sled for the iPod Touch, giving the non-cellular MP3 PMP player access to its mobile 3G CDMA/EV-DO data network so iPod Touch owners can have ubiquitous web access on the go, like the iPhone which is currently tied to AT&T's mobile 3G network. For voice, iPod Touch owners can probably work in a VoIP solution over 3G.

The sled, which recently made its way over to the FCC for regulatory approval, bears Sprint's logo, ZTE branding, as well as a sticker for a Qualcomm radio. Called the Peel 3G router, the device looks more like a thin sled or skin, much like how the Mophie Juice Pack Air provides a bit of protection as well as added juice in a compact form factor for the iPhone. Instead, the Peel 3G router, as its name implies, will serve as both a hard case and a "router" to provide mobile 3G access. From the pictures, though, it looks like the standard Apple dock connector was not shown, so we'll be curious as to how the iPod Touch will connect, whether it be through the router's build in WiFi, as in a MiFi sled, or if it'd be through a wired means.

In the past, Sprint has not been shy that it wants to join the iOS race. It had marketed its MiFi-like Overdrive for iPhone and iPad owners to have access to its 3G network as well as 4G network and avoid AT&T's congested, slow networks if need be.

If Sprint is successful, the unlimited data plan, if affordable, provided the the Peel 3G router, coupled with aggressive marketing to those who would rather not be tied to a contract--specifically for voice--may appeal to a lot of iPod Touch owners who have thus far resisted the urge to jump on the iPhone.

Verizon 4G to Go Live in 30 Major Metropolitan Cities

Don't get your hopes up just yet as Verizon Wireless's initial 4G LTE deployment will happen only with data cards and USB modems, at least on November 15th when the carrier begins launching its assault against rival Sprint, which has had an early lead with devices like the Sprint Overdrive, the HTC EVO 4G, and the Samsung Epic 4G Galaxy S smartphone.

It's been rumored that smartphones running on Verizon Wireless's 4G network will be arriving early 2011 once network optimization and battery life improves. We'll have to wait and see, but for now, rumor has it that November 15 will see faster modems for VZW in 30 major markets, including New York, LA, Chicago, and Philadelphia and ten airport locations.

Also, it seems that as the carrier moves to 4G LTE, Verizon Wireless will also join GSM carriers AT&T and T-Mobile USA in employing SIM cards.

Video: Sprint Samsung Intercept Unboxing & Hardware Tour

In this video, we take a look at the successor to the Samsung Moment, the Samsung Intercept, for Sprint. The budget Android 2.1 device features a 3.2-inch WQVGA TFT LCD touchscreen display, sliding QWERTY keyboard with great tactile keyboard, and an 800 MHz processor--placing it higher than some mid-range devices like the HTC Aria but lower than the 1 GHz CPU on the HTC EVO 4G. The device comes with a 2 GB microSD memory card, 512 MB ROM/256 MB RAM, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and optical joystick.



The Intercept is an interesting device as it attempts to replace the Moment, which had a devout albeit niche following. In many ways, the Intercept is an improvement over its predecessor--it sports a more modern body that is compact, comfortable, and lightweight. However, there are some things that Samsung had cut out to make the device affordable at just under $100 with contract--a full $80 less than the original price that the Moment debuted at.

Some of those omissions include a lower resolution screen at WQVGA compared to the HVGA on the predecessor, LCD instead of AMOLED screen, and plastic rather than glass for the touchscreen. In use, however, you won't be too bothered with some of these like the plastic instead of glass and LCD may be a better technology for outdoors use and readability under direct sunlight than AMOLED, but keen eyes may notice some pixelation on the screen with the lower resolution screen.

Additionally, rather than supporting the faster Sprint EV-DO Rev. A network, the Samsung Intercept only works on the slower 3G EV-DO Rev. 0 protocol. We'll explore more about browsing speeds in the next video, but for now, budget conscious users have another great 3G-capable Android smartphone to choose. The Intercept packs a lot of punch and if you're willing to compromise a little, the price may be just right for you. Great keyboard, a number of included Sprint apps and services for no additional subscription costs, GPS, good call quality and capable browser, as well as a good 3.2-megapixel camera all help to highlight the value of the device at just $99. The device is available in either steel grey or satin pink colors.

The Intercept ships with Android 2.1, though an upgrade to Android 2.2 should be available at some point in the future.
