Which Windows Mobile Phones Run Android?

Windows Mobile continues to be a highly versatile platform not only in the level of customizations that can be achieved through registry tweaks and ROM swaps, but also in its ability to run other operating systems through the haret Linux bootloader. In the past we've shown you Android running on the Touch Pro2, Touch Diamond2, and HD2, and we've shown you Ubuntu running on the Touch Pro2. But what about other devices? Here's a run down of which devices can run Android (and if we missed any, please drop a comment!). Some run Android so well that you could probably use the the operating system full time, while others are still very much in beta mode. Note that generally, the instructions for getting into Android on your Windows Phone is the same:

1. Load the files to your storage card
2. Run haret.exe and wait about 2 minutes
3. To get back to Windows Mobile, soft reset your phone

Security Vulnerability Found on Latest iPhone 4/iOS 4 Jailbreak

While the new iPhone 4 jailbreak is relatively easy to perform and can get users up and running in no time to add new features and functions to their iPhone, the process does expose a security vulnerability that would make it easy for thieves and malicious hackers to steal your messages, phone book, and other items. Even if you're not on an iPhone, you're not safe as your friends who have a jailbroken iPhone with your information on it can leave your information vulnerable.

According to BGR, the exploit works by taking advantage of the PDF viewing capabilities:

This is done through the jailbreakme PDF exploit. Under this method, it would be possible to steal your address book, text message database, or much worse. There is going to be a security solution soon though, as BGR has been informed that a plugin named PDF Loading Warner” has been created to combat this potential security risk. It works by hooking into the device system and will display a warning before a PDF can be displayed. If you install this plugin and navigate to a website that should not be showing a PDF and get this warning, you are able to click “Cancel”, blocking the PDF from loading and subsequently stealing your data.

The forthcoming patch does not patch up the vulnerability in iOS 4, but rather give users more control, much like how desktop operating systems now ask if you want to run an executable program.

24 Hours Later: A Jailbroken iPhone 4 (Video)

It's been about 24 hours since I've jailbroken my iPhone 4. This is my first jailbreak experience, and while the actual jailbreaking was super easy, the aftermath was a bit confusing. After you jailbreak, you get an icon on your homescreen that launches Cydia, an repository of "packages" that include a vast array of apps that can tweak your phone. It's really up to you to figure out which packages to install, but with a little searching and asking on Twitter, you'll soon be pointed in the right direction.




On the iPhone 3GS and previous iPhone devices, jailbreaking often meant having to deal with a slower device with reduced battery life. The iPhone 4, thanks to the boost in battery capacity and CPU speed, can handle more tweaking than its predecessors. In the last day, I've noticed that my device is slightly slower and more power hungry, but not enough to impact usability.

So what have I done thus far? I've used IntelliScreen to allow me to see email previews right from my lock screen, MyWi to turn the iPhone into a WiFi router, WinterBoard to load themes, SBSettings to enable an easy way to toggle on various system radios, MIM to change the carrier name in the upper left corner, and Five Icon Dock to increase the number of allowed icons in the dock to five. Most of what I've done so far has been to make iOS feel as usable as Android and Windows Mobile, which can do many of the things I mentioned above out of the box (or without rooting/unlocking/HardSPL'ing). I'm looking forward to exploring more of the wonders of jailbreaking over the coming weeks.

Get FaceTime Working Over 3G On iPhone 4 Through Jailbreak

We'll call this a mid-level difficulty hack we know many are interested on. One of those really cool iPhone 4 features that we wish wasn't restricted is FaceTime calls being limited through Wi-Fi. It sort of becomes pointless to have such a feature and not be able to use it in every scenario thinkable. Well, for those of you who've already taken the Jailbreak plunge, you'll be happy to know there's a way to get it working with a little help from Cydia.

As it turns out, the Jailbreak doesn't really liberate FaceTime to work through 3G form the start, but Cydia offers an app called My3G which tricks the phone into thinking it's got Wi-Fi when it's really connected through 3G. The result is having FaceTime work implicitly through 3G because the phone thinks it's using Wi-Fi once My3G is running. Here are the steps to get it working:

1) Jailbreak your iPhone 4 via www.jailbreakme.com.
2) Download and upgrade to the latest Cydia package.
3) Open Cydia, Go to Manage then Sources.
4) Click Sources, Edit then add: http://apt.modmyi.com
5) Search for "My3G" -- download, and install it.
6) Go through the Rock setup process with a username and password. Open My3G and leave all settings on the default.
7) FaceTime should now work over 3G! -- Make sure to "Forget" the WiFi network you are on (via iOS settings) if you want to test it.

I've Jailbroken my iPhone 4 (Update)

Perhaps you heard: the iPhone Dev Team has jailbroken the iPhone 4. I've always been interested in jailbreaking, but have never gone through with it. From what I've seen from others that have taken the plunge, you can fix literally every omission in iOS with a utility that can be downloaded once you jailbreak. Want a quick way to turn on and off WiFi and Bluetooth through a tap of the notification bar? Jailbreak. Want to see previews of your new emails or SMS on the lock screen? Jailbreak. Want to spruce up your iPhone with a new theme that changes icons, graphics, and more? Jailbreak! It's really compelling stuff that can breath new life into your iOS device and not make it feel so...confined to Apple's idea of how a device should behave. And hey, it's legal now.

It seems that on the iPhone 3GS and below, jailbreaking also meant that your device would be slower and have worse battery life when compared to stock, especially after installing a bevy of software. The iPhone 4 has a bigger battery life and faster CPU, so the opportunity is rife.

Jailbreaking has become stupidly easy. The latest version from Comex entails you going to a website on your iOS device, hitting a button, and waiting five minutes. Just open Safari and go to JailbreakMe.com, slide the slider, and boom, you're there.

You should know that jailbreaking with this current version will make MMS and FaceTime inoperable on your device. Also, it'll void your warranty, but apparently un-jailbreaking is as easy as doing a software restore.

What have I done so far? Not much--I have a lot to learn. For starters, I've loaded a theme that has removed the labels from my icons, as you can see above. It's a start. Once I get the hang of this, I'll keep you informed of my experiences as jailbreakee.

Expanded the four icon dock on the iPhone to five. Also, grabbed MyWi which allow you to do WiFi tethering.

Motorola Droid X Gets Easy 1-Click Rooting

Despite the eFuse security measures, the Droid X was rooted a week ago going through some lengthy process and uncertainy about the legality of the procedure. Now, just a day after the DMCA has been revised to permit rooting, enterprising hackers have developed a quick, simple, and painless 1-click process to rooting your Droid X if you're so inclined to do so. The 1-click rooting program is currently limited to PCs only, but it does make it pretty simple so that even the basic consumer can approach rooting with relative ease.

It seems that a very large number of custom ROMs are being based off CyanogenMod ROM these days. Not only that, CyanogenMod ROM is being ported to more and more handsets. I run CyanogenMod on my Nexus One and my wife runs CyanogenMod on her G1 (both Froyo, by the way).

Nexus One Gets New Radio Image from Korea

The "radio" on a smartphone is a complicated mess of interconnected drivers and APIs (what the camera has to do with the phone I'll never know). Regardless, improvements to the radio can improve signal strength, data throughput, WiFi, and somehow unlock 720p video recording, all all the same time. Of course, it could make your phone suck down more battery juice, or even prevent your phone from being a phone at all (by killing your wireless abilities).

The Nexus One was recently released in Korea, and came with a new radio. This radio is apparently agnostic to carrier-specificity (it's reported to work on all varieties of the Nexus One, those in Korea, in the U.S. using AT&T and T-Mobile, and even users in New Zealand ).

Initial reports indicate that most users are seeing marginal increases in 3G speeds, and no noticeable impact on battery life using the Korean radio.

One joker in the forums said the only thing he noticed was that people he was calling had a hard time understanding him with his new Korean accent. ;)

I don't have super-fast 3G coverage in my hometown, but in my tests I also saw an increase in speeds. Ironically the upload speed increased more than the download speeds.

If you have unlocked your Nexus One and are running a custom recovery (such as RA-Recovery) and you'd like to give the new radio a try you can download the 5.08 radio here; put this .zip on the root of your sdcard and reboot into recovery mode. Flash the radio508signed.zip and reboot. Then reboot again when prompted.

Android Quick Tip: Multitasking

This Android Quick Tip™ is actually two tips in one! Unlike some "other" smartphones that just barely added the ability to multi-task to their OS, Android has had it since day one. On Android you can run many, many apps at the same time, and using this often-overlooked tip, you can easily and quickly switch between them.

To do this, tap and hold the Home button: a grid of up to 6 of your last run apps will open, tap an icon to switch to that app. But what if you're a power-user and want to be able to quickly switch between more than six apps? You can always go back home (to your launcher) and launch the app from there, but if that's too time consuming, grab CyanogenMod 6 which ups the default number of recently used apps to eight ... but also gives you the option to increase this to 12, and even 15. Check out the video to see how!
