EA releases Worms for Android

EA Games has released its classic turn-based blaster Worms on the Android Market. The publisher says that Worms' graphics and animations have been optimized for the Android platform, and our initial impressions of the game are that it seems to be up there with recent Worms console titles in terms of graphical fidelity.

Worms for Android offers a host of game modes from previous Worms games including puzzle, racing and banzai. The characteristic voice acting that fans of the series will recognize is also present and correct.

A QR code for the North American version can be found after the jump. European readers can find it by searching for "Worms" in the Android Market.

Parachute Panic HD for Windows Phone 7 coming out this week

The "iPhone hit-game" Parachute Panic will reportedly be launching on Windows Phone 7's Xbox LIVE this week. The game is near identical to the iOS version of the game, but will feature Xbox Live achievements and leaderboards, and of course, will run on Windows Phone 7. The official description reads:

This unique casual game requires you to successfully land a host of parachutists into passing boats. Beware of imminent dangers such as helictopter blades, U.F.O´s, sharks and thunder clouds. The game offers beautiful hand drawn graphics, smooth animations, catchy acapella music and awesome sound effects. In addition to that we created funny animations for any failed enemy encounter :D We had a lot of fun creating this game and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The game looks like it will be another addictive time-waster for Windows Phone, and we eagerly await its release.

iBlast Moki for Windows Phone 7 hands on video

A new physics based puzzle game for Windows Phone 7 called iBlast Moki was just released today on the Marketplace. The goal is to get you little Mokis into the the hole with the use of bombs: place the bomb wherever you want and detonate it to move the little characters. The game’s design looks a lot like Sony’s LocoRoco (and Rolando on the iPhone) and really suit this time of game. The only little bug that I encountered is the sudden disappearance of the inventory menu (happened once and never again..). This is an Xbox Live enabled game so you have achievements and leader boards and obviously a trial version to try it out before paying $2.99. Check out the video after the break:

3D Brick Breaker Revolution for Windows Phone 7

3D Brick Breaker Revolution is a port of the iPhone game that was released a couple of years ago. If you have already played it on Apple’s platform that you should know hat to expect given that everything is identical in this newer version besides the Xbox Live integration (and the fact that it cost an outrageous $2.99 compared to$0.99 on the iPhone) . The only downside is that relatively low framerate which is really disappointing especially in such a basic 3D game. It doesn’t really show up in the video below but I assure you that it isn’t running at 30fps or even 25fps. The Marketplace quality control just failed here..or Microsoft just doesn’t care because even the game’s screenshots available in the Marketplace are just horrible grabs of the 3 years old J2ME java version and not representative of the actual Windows Phone 7 version! Anyway, Check out the video after the break:

IGN launches coverage of Android games

Now that you have your shiny new Droid X or Vibrant (and maybe even a Vibrant or Captivate?) in hand, you want some games. And you don't want to waste money on bad games, you want the best. IGN has been doing game reviews for the iPhone since the App Store was launched two years ago, and today they announced they will be reviewing Android games as well.

They are kicking things off with a HTC Evo review, top app recommendations, and a number of games including NOVA and Asphalt 5. You might recognize Asphalt 5 from our Captivate benchmarks.

The fact that a mainstream gaming site like IGN is investing time and resources into Android is a great sign of how far the platform has improved since the G1 days. However, there is still a lot that can be done to help it grow further. Hey Google, if you really want to play for keeps, why not get a deal worked out with Valve to get a mobile version of their Steam platform (with 25 million users) built right into Android?

CP Design's iPhone Game Pad prototype does Donkey Kong Country right

With the iControlPad seemingly slipping further and further from reality, iPhone gamers with an affinity for buttons have fewer reasons to get out of bed in the morning and face the world. If that's you then it's time to wake up, Sunshine, because the iPhone Game Pad is here to bring a little light to your life. It's a somewhat chubby slip-on case that, as of now, works only with the original model iPhone. (There's a 3G/3GS model to come.) On the face it offers four primary control buttons plus a D-pad, what appears to be Select and Start buttons, plus a pair of shoulder buttons atop. This combination should make it perfect for emulation hounds or any 'ol heathen who values tactility over design purity. As of now it's just a prototype, but if you have the resources to bring this thing to production the folks at CP Design who crafted it would surely love to hear from you.

Archetype Shooter Game is Optimized for iPhone 4 (Video)

In this video we take a look at Archetype, which is optimized for the iPhone 4 (it scales to the full 960x640 resolution). It's a multiplayer first person shooter that allows you to play deathmatch-style games with ten players over WiFi or 3G. The controls take some getting used to with a dual joystick interface: the left joystick controls movement, and the right control aim. If you've played Halo on Xbox, it's a similar setup.

The game is available for $2.99 in the app store, which is a good deal for such a graphically impressive (and fun) game.

What's your favorite 3D game for iPhone?

Android versus iPhone live multiplayer gaming made possible in SGN's Skies of Glory

Android versus iPhone live multiplayer gaming made possible in SGN's Skies of Glory
By Vlad Savov posted Jul 19th 2010 6:45AM
Shocking as this might sound, there are no only a few games in which iPhone and Android users can go at each other in live multiplayer mode. Exploiting this vast void is Social Gaming Network, whose Skies of Glory aerial dogfighting title has been ported to Android (2.0 and above) while retaining the ability to communicate with iOS devices over WiFi, 3G or Bluetooth connections. Frankly, we can't think of a better game to get the cross-platform multiplayer movement going: fAndroids and iPhoneys gunning each other down while talking smack to themselves should prove therapeutic for both parties. On a more serious note, given the tireless growth that both platforms are showing, this kind of thing should hopefully tend toward being the rule rather than the exception.

Update: Our readers have sagely reminded us that Raging Thunder 2 and Homerun Battle 3D have done the cross-platform dance already. The more the merrier, we say.

Quake 2 Test: HTC Desire Vs. Samsung Galaxy S

Both run Android. Both have lightning-fast processors (the Galaxy S a Hummingbird/Power VR, the Desire a Snapdragon/Adreno). Both can play Quake 2. But which handles better?

See the side-by-side comparison below. I won't give too many clues away, but I've got to say that I'm pretty disappointed with the outcome. I'm like a proud parent who expected much greater things of her child—even if the initial tests suggested one day I'd be sobbing into my hanky, wishing I'd backed the other horse. Sorry, I'm so upset, I'm mixing up my metaphors.

Got a Motorola Droid? Then you'll be wanting to see how it plays Quake III, right? Right. [Android Central Forums via Android Central]

Shoot 1UP Windows Phone 7 Game

Here's a very cool looking game that's in the works for Windows Phone 7. Developer MommysBestGames is "currently targeting to release the game with the launch of the phone." Not only will the graphics be improved for Windows Phone 7, there will also be a "special game play mode just for that platform, and a new playable ship." Below are a couple videos of the game in action both on the Windows Phone 7 emulator (as a smoke test), and on Xbox in regular speed.
