T-Mobile Apologizes For Mistakenly Sending Notification Bar Ads

You must have noticed it in the news last week that T-Mobile took the opportunity to display ads in the notification bar of some Android phones with the occasion of an update to T-Mobile's My Account application.

After the word got out, T-Mobile made an official statement, via e-mail and from a spokesperson, saying that the advertisement was a mistake and that the carrier is sorry for any inconveniences it might have caused. The wording goes like this: "during a recent software update, a message to promote T-Mobile's free VIP Zone was mistakenly sent to certain customers and appeared on the notification bar for some Android devices. After T-Mobile was made aware of this mistake, the company stopped the notifications. T-Mobile apologizes for the inconvenience this may have caused customers".

With most of Google's revenue coming from ads, do you see a possible future where ads would be delivered, in a similar way, to your mobile device (and not only in free, ad-supported applications)?

T-Mobile UK starts selling HTC One X and One S on April 5

Today T-Mobile UK announced that it will be joining O2 in offering the HTC hot duo, One X and One S, starting from April 5. The two smartphones are officially on sale from this morning and we already got a chance to play with the One X, but we are still a few days away from getting carrier-subsidized versions.
T-Mobile UK will be offering the HTC One X for free on a £41 per month, 24-month plan, while the HTC One S will be free on a £36 per month, 24 month plan. The carrier allows you to register your interest in the handsets, but strangely enough isn't taking pre-orders for either just yet.
According to the official press release though, you'll be able to purchase the phone in both the T-Mobile brick and mortar stores and its online shop, so you'll be free to choose where to get it.
So with O2 and T-Mobile already confirming the availability dates for the HTC One duo, we are looking at Vodafone to reveal the date when it will be honoring those pre-orders.

Khloe Kardashian stars in T-Mobile's Valentine’s Day commercial

T-Mobile is getting ready to offer free smartphones on February 11-12 just in time for Valentine’s Day, so to help get the word out they released a new commercial featuring the gorgeous Khloe Kardashian.

The commercial takes place in a little store with a bummed out Khloe missing her husband; Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom. While sitting there, she receives several packages. The last she received rings upon arrival and when opened it is an HTC G2 with an “I love you” text message from her husband.

The HTC G2 is only one of the smartphones that T-Mobile will be offering for free for all the guys who are behind on their Valentine’s Day shopping, or who just want a new phone for themselves. Of course, a two-year contract is required to get this pricing. Check out the commercial and tell us what you think in the comments below.

T-Mobile has announced a two-day Valentine's Promotion kicking in Friday, February 11 until Saturday, February 12, where all T-Mobile phones, including the latest and greatest, will be offered for free.

Signing up for smartphone qualifying plans on two-year contracts, customers will be able to choose from 30 phones in Magenta's line-up, including the popular T-Mobile myTouch 4G, HTC HD7, T-Mobile G2 and Samsung Vibrant.

On the other hand, TmoNews ran a Rebate Form for the two days where T-Mobile lists the free smartphones, as well as those requiring a purchase which will later be returned in the form of a rebate. The devices mentioned above belong to this category and you can check them out in the screenshot below. Anyone (and their Valentine) heading to a T-Mobile store this weekend?

T-Mobile Galaxy S 4G is the first HSPA+ phone capable of 21Mbps downloads, coming February

4G announcements are raining left and right from the carriers, since the marketing departments are working overtime to counter the Verizon iPhone introduction. T-Mobile just lifted the veil over the 4G version of its Samsung Vibrant - the Galaxy S 4G - which will be available for purchase some time this month.

The phone has similar specs with the Vibrant, save for a few very important aspects. It has an HSPA+ radio inside, made by ST-Ericsson, which can theoretically take full advantage of the current 21Mbps HSPA+ network of T-Mobile. The rest of the 4G gang on T-Mo now goes up to "only" 14.4Mbps - in theory, that is.

The other major differences are that this one is running Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box, has 16GB of memory and, last but not least, it has a bigger 1650mAh battery to compensate for the additional battery drain that 4G brings along. Oh, and why no camera flash for the 5MP shooter again, is beyond us.

The carrier has included T-Mobile TV for watching free content over 4G, like ABC News, Fox Sport or PBX Kids on-the-go. Samsung Media Hub is also present for buying or renting movies, music and TV shows. The Galaxy 4G will come with "Inception" preinstalled, to try and lure you in using the Media Hub more often. Other multimedia goodies include Slacker Radio, as well as the doubleTwist with AirSync apps for wirelessly syncing media with your home computer. Qik is the video chat program of choice on the T-Mobile Galaxy S 4G.

We can't wait to test the download speeds on this one, and compare them to the slower HSPA+ radios on the T-mobile myTouch 4G, or the T-Mobile G2. Something tells us that until Big Magenta rolls out its 42Mbps upgrade of the network by the end of the year, the speed differences in real life won't be very significant.

What Is This T-Mobile Android Slider?

We're usually pretty good at identifying mystery handsets, but we need some help here. This blurry photo fell into our lap with no further information attached, except the suggestion that we're looking at a Motorola-built device -- which is strange, because this thing has HTC written all over it, if you ask us. In fact, if it weren't for the Android buttons and T-Mobile branding on the face, we could almost swear that we were looking at a rebirth of the HTC TyTN II (a.k.a. HTC Kaiser and AT&T Tilt); that bulge at the bottom is a fairly unique feature.

If we had to guess, we'd say that this QWERTY slider was a mid-range device -- if it is in fact unreleased hardware -- that could be a mashup of the Cliq and Droid 2. Obviously it's difficult to tell the thickness from this angle and photo quality, but this one seems a bit chunky to be a high-end 2011 handset, even with the keyboard. So, any theories here? We certainly appreciate the assistance! (Larger, vertically-oriented image pictured below.)

T-Mobile Announces Samsung Galaxy S 4G For This Month

We told you last week that the Samsung Galaxy S 4G is coming to T-Mobile on February 23 and it looks like there was more to the story than the rumor, as Magenta just announced officially that the smartphone will be available this month.

The handset advertised to be "the fastest smartphone running on America’s Largest 4G Network" is basically your classic T-Mobile Vibrant with an added front facing camera, larger -- 1650mAh -- battery and Google's Android 2.2 Froyo platform on it -- plus a copy of the movie Inception. Theoretical peak downloads of up to 21 Mbps are referred to in the Press Release but those speeds might depend from region to region as well as your signal quality and strength.

DoubleTwist with AirSync will be also bundled on the phone providing an easy way to back up and sync pictures, videos and music to and from the computer. Additionally, Kindle will also be preloaded for all your eBook reader needs. No exact date was made public, except the February availability, so the previously rumored February 23 still has a solid chance to stand.

HTC Mozart Variant Wi-Fi Certified, T-Mobile-Bound?

Just a couple of days ago we were reporting that a release of the HTC Mozart, a Windows Phone 7 device with a 1GHz Qualcomm CPU and 512MB of RAM, would happen for T-Mobile in the very near future. Adding credence to this story is a passing of a the Mozart over at the WiFi alliance. The model is listed as PD67110, which isn't dissimilar than the PD67100, which is the European HTC Mozart. Rumor has it that the Mozart will hit T-Mobile with both a 8GB and 16GB model. We're still not sure if T-Mobile is going to drop the "7" labeling from the Mozart (as you might recall, the European release goes by "7 Mozart"). Or, they could call this the "Melody", which was trademarked by HTC late last year.

T-Mobile confirms Galaxy S with 4G, Android-based Sidekick 4G are coming

Whoa, this is kind of out of the blue: on top of the Vibrant 4G that we've already had leaked ad nauseam (though he refers to it as a "Galaxy S 4G"), T-Mobile USA CEO Phiipp Humm mentioned at an event this morning that the company is preparing an HSPA+ Sidekick -- yes, a Sidekick -- albeit with Android slotted in place of the defunct Danger Hiptop operating system. For the record, T-Mobile hasn't had any Sidekicks in its lineup since the middle of last year, though it does own the Sidekick brand -- not Danger / Microsoft -- and would undoubtedly love to bring it back to relevance. Coincidentally, Mister Android himself, Andy Rubin, came from Danger -- so the Sidekick's starting to follow him around. Kind of like... you know, a sidekick. Both products are said to be "coming soon."

3D display and recording functionality on board with LG's T-Mobile G-Slate?

Just for a brief moment during T-Mobile's CES press event in Las Vegas, we saw a glimpse of the upcoming LG made T-Mobile G-Slate, but it unfortunately was not in live form. Regardless, the announcement did provide some useful information about the Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered tablet that easily contends in the same space as other highly regarded tablets coming to market.

However, it might ultimately prove to be the most impressive after an LG spokesman spilled some details regarding the specs of the G-Slate. Specifically, it's going to feature an 8.9” no-glasses required 3D display, the ability to shoot video in 3D as well, Tegra 2 dual-core processor, and an HDMI connector.

Now the first two features are worthy on their own and would place the G-Slate in a whole new level above the competition – especially when you factor in the tablet's launch some time within the first half of the year. Furthermore, you can't count out the notion of it boasting a 3D display since LG had a 4.3” 3D display on hand at their CES booth. Granted that it wasn't a fully functioning smartphone, it marks the foundation of it possibility being implemented on upcoming products; like the G-Slate.

With only a few weeks separating today and the start of MWC, it'll be truly interesting to see what additional news will come out about this highly anticipated tablet.

T-Mobile's Samsung Vibrant 4G FCC Cleared

The Samsung Vibrant 4G, headed to T-Mobile on February 23 according to rumors, was recently certified by Bluetooth SIG and WiFi Alliance, going by the model name SGH-T959V.

The same Samsung-made model SGH-T959V was just cleared at FCC and we know it's the 4G version of the Vibrant on Magenta (the original T-Mobile Vibrant had the model number T959). So there we go, Bluetooth SIG, WiFi Alliance and now FCC, all approved the SGH-T959V. We just need to hold our breaths till last week of February but we're quite sure we'll see the device a couple of times before it's rumored official release. According to initial leaks, the next Galaxy S variant will deliver 4G HSPA+ speeds of 21Mbps on Magenta and will sport a front facing video camera offering T-Mobile Video Chat powered by Qik. Oh, and it will ship with Android 2.2 Froyo.

February 2nd possible launch date for T-Mobile with the Dell Streak 7

The groundhog isn't the only thing that might appear in front of cameras on February 2nd. According to a photograph of internal T-Mobile documents, on the same day we might see T-Mobile launch the Dell Streak 7 tablet. And while the groundhog's appearance might forecast the weather according to a myth, the release of the Dell Streak 7 will forecast a lot of fun and business productivity for those who buy the 7 inch tablet.

The 7 inch display is Gorilla Glass with resolution of 800 x 480. That actually comes up a bit light compared to the 1024 x 600 resolution on the similarly sized Samsung Galaxy Tab's screen. The tablet offers a front facing and rear facing camera measured at 1.3MP and 5MP respectively. The Dell Streak 7 should literally streak with the help of a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2. Android 2.2 will be installed at launch with an upgrade to Android 2.3 expected.

There is no word yet on pricing, but if the tablet is to come to market on February 2nd, Dell and T-Mobile should be handing out some information shortly on the carrier's first 4G enabled tablet.

Pour one out: T-Mobile G1 no longer for sale

And just like that, the T-Mobile G1 is no more. A quick stock check at T-Mobile USA, Amazon, and a few other retailers confirms that the world's first Android handset is no longer for sale, marking the end of an era. Of course, it's been nearly two years since we first saw the G1, and its 528MHz Qualcomm processor and 320 x 480 3.2-inch display have been long since outclassed by the recent crop of high-end Android hardware, but we're still feeling a little nostalgic. They grow up so fast, don't they? Take a pause, take a sip, and let's look back on the original of the species.

RIM's BlackBerry Curve 9300 spotted in T-Mobile branding

It's certainly not the first time we've seen this here BlackBerry (with "this here" meaning "Curve 9300"), but it's the first time we've seen it outfitted in carrier clothing. Notice that T-Mobile logo at the bottom? That's the clearest indication yet that this particular 'Berry will soon be headed to T-Mob, but given that it's unlikely to support an upgrade to BlackBerry OS 6, your off-the-chart excitement level may indeed be unwarranted. At any rate, we're also hearing that Rogers in Canada will be snagging this at launch, but we'll be passing along official details just as soon as we get them.

iPhone Coming to T-Mobile USA in Q3

A popular Mac blog is reporting that the iPhone may be headed to GSM carrier T-Mobile USA in the third quarter. Although T-Mobile is a GSM operator with a growing 3G network, its AWS deployment is not compatible with the radios found on the Apple smartphone which is currently compatible with AT&T's network. The source says that (s)he is 80 percent certain that the iPhone will hit T-Mobile in Q3.

For its part, T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom has not been shy in aspiring to bring Apple's popular smarphone to its network by the end of the year.

With high demand of the iPhone and a msas rollout of the device in multiple countries globally, anything is possible, but it may not be likely if Apple has to retool the T-Mobile-specific device for 3G compatibility.

Samsung Vibrant Unboxing (Video)

The Samsung Vibrant is the T-Mobile version of Samsung's Galaxy S series of Android powered smartphones. You may have already seen plenty of coverage on the AT&T Samsung Captivate and European Galaxy S devices, but the T-Mobile version is slightly different. One thing you'll notice right away from the unboxing is the "Avatar" movie promotion. Yes it comes with the full Avatar movie on a 2Gb storage card so right away you'll be able to make use of the Super AMOLED screen. Other than that, you'll notice all of the usual suspects in the box; stereo headphones, USB cable, USB AC adapter, and some documentation.

Is the iPhone Death Grip an Issue on Every Phone?

We've all been making fun of the iPhone 4 antenna problems for quite some time now. You know the one, where left-handers loose signal strength when they try to actually talk on their iPhone 4's.

It turns out that the iPhone 4's "unique new antenna design" may not be the cause of the problem after all. The electrical conductance of human skin combined with the signal blocking ability of the human body can combine in a sort of "perfect storm" which can cause a dramatic drop in signal strength. Unfortunately, the iPhone 4's antenna design seems to facilitate the conditions needed for this "perfect storm".

That doesn't mean that other phones are immune. Take, for example, my Nexus One running the latest radio from Korea. As the video illustrates, holding the phone "just right" causes a near-immediate drop of two bars -- half the signal strength!

After some experimentation I was able to figure out just how to hold my Nexus One to cause the bars to drop by one or two at will. This may add some credibility to Steve Job's statement that "you're holding it wrong". Then again, I had to try dozens of different "holding techniques" in both hands -- which took about 20 minutes -- to find out exactly how I needed to hold the phone to replicate the "death grip". (Maybe it doesn't give him that much credibility after all.)

What this does show is that the human body does a good job both conducting and blocking electromagnetic signals. If you're experiencing a drop in bars, using a Bluetooth headset may be your best option -- that way you don't have to touch the phone at all.
