With Apple touting FaceTime and shunning Adobe's Flash web plug-in, Adobe is striking back with partner google by introducing a proof of concept Flash-based video conference app called FlashTime. FlashTime, as its name implies, requires Flash, and will be a cross-platform solution where Flash and the appropriate hardware--mainly a front-facing camera on a mobile or webcam on a PC or Mac desktop--are involved. FlashTime was recently demoed by Adobe--video below--on the Android OS (Android 2.2 Froyo required as 2.2 supports Flash 10.1 Mobile).
Unfortunately, though, the downside is that a majority of US-based smartphones on the market today still lack a front-facing camera for video calls. Of those released recently, the Nokia E73 on T-Mobile, the iPhone 4, HTC EVO 4G, and the forthcoming Epic 4G on Sprint are the only ones with a front-facing camera. That said, FlashTime will still work with the regular rear camera on phones.
