HTC kicked this week off with quite a bit of thunder. Embargoes on a few of their latest devices lifted and reviews went live across the Web. Most everyone – that I saw, at least – had only good things to say about the HTC One X and One S. They are a far cry from HTC's last crop of devices; they're much more refined, feature Beats Audio in both hardware and system-wide software, sport a much-improved camera (ImageSense) with ImageChip, better processors and so on and so forth.
HTC isn't stopping there, however. They're teaming up with Sprint in the Big Apple later this evening to co-announce "their latest collaboration."
A few recent leaks force us to believe that the HTC EVO One, which would be Sprint's own version of the One series, will be in attendance. Chances are, that set of rumors is probably true. There isn't much else that we've heard from HTC, specifically in terms of Sprint news. And a render of what we can only assume is the EVO One appeared just yesterday alongside the One X and One S. On top of that, Android-Life was able to snag a few photos of the alleged EVO One.
It's all but official.
But what would such a device entail? For starters, EVO is generally a high-end line of devices, Sprint's best of the best (much like Verizon's DROID series). I imagine Sprint is trying to rejuvenate their EVO line, which is going to take more than the One V or One S. Most likely, the EVO One will closely resemble the One X internally. Through the grapevine last week, we heard the EVO One would feature a 4.7-inch 720p display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, 4G LTE and a 2,650mAh battery. As for the chip, I imagine it would be the same S4 featured in the LTE-compatible version of the One X that will be heading to AT&T in the future. The great part is that the 2,650mAh is a full 800mAh boost over the AT&T version, which would certainly make up for it being non-removable.
The other important part here, though, is that this device will be bearing LTE, which is why Sprint is co-heading the event. We've been hearing a lot about Sprint LTE lately, particularly around field testing, the LG Viper and Sprint LTE Galaxy Nexus. What we haven't heard, however, is a launch date. With at least three LTE devices on the horizon, the launch of Sprint LTE has to be nearing quickly.
The rumored launch date of the EVO One is "early June." The Nexus, on the other hand, is expected to launch much sooner – April 22nd is the most recent date we've come across. In other words, the dates and devices aren't lining up with any possible Sprint LTE launch dates.
To be more clear, Sprint is teaming up with HTC to supposedly announce a phone this evening, which leads me to believe they also want to launch their LTE network alongside the EVO One. (After all, why would they want to launch it with the Galaxy Nexus, which is going on four-months-old, instead of a brand new device with swelling hype?) This can mean one of two things: either the Nexus launches in June with the EVO One and LTE, or the EVO One and LTE will launch sooner than we had hoped.
Either way, we will know soon enough what exactly HTC and Sprint have up their sleeves. They're set to spill it all at 5:30 PM Eastern. I will be on location at the event, livebloging and bringing you all of the deets as they unfold!
