3D Sharp Galapagos 003SH First Disney Mobile Smartphone

No-glasses-required 3D screens may not be ready for the living room just yet, but the technology is set to make a splash on the mobile market this year, coming to both phones and gaming consoles. Showing a strong sign of faith in the technology, Disney Mobile is planning on releasing its version of the Sharp Galapagos 003SH 3D Android handset as its first-ever smartphone.

Disney Mobile has long-ago shuttered its US operations, but continues on in Japan. Its choice of a 3D-capable model for its first smartphone is especially exciting, as it suggests that Disney is enthusiastic about producing content for 3D mobile devices. Once users get over the initial "wow" factor of the 3D displays, the availability of 3D content is going to be what drives the success or failure of the technology. Disney, through Pixar, is well ahead of the game when it comes to a library of material ripe for 3D. If the company is smart about taking advantage of the nascent 3D mobile market, we could see both movies and games released with Disney's 3D smartphone in mind. That is, at least, assuming no Pixar/Steve Jobs issues creep up.

While there are no plans to bring a "Disney Phone" back to the US, the Galapagos 003SH should be arriving later this year, sans Disney-branding. Any 3D content Disney wants to release for it in the US would be a big help towards its success. The Disney smartphone will be available in Japan next month.
